✨ Seffi’s Bris – A Celebration of Love, Legacy, and Community✨

At Hebrew College, in a room filled with warmth and joy, we gathered to welcome Aviv Yosef (Seffi) into the covenant of the Jewish people. His parents, Elana & Sarah Pollack, crafted a ceremony that was deeply personal yet profoundly communal, weaving their own family traditions into the rich fabric of Jewish continuity.

A particularly moving moment came at the conclusion of the bris, when Elana and Sarah offered a special rendition and melody of Birkat Habanim to their sons, Seffi and Avri. Their voices carried not only blessing but a powerful affirmation—of love, of commitment, and of their dedication to flourishing of our people.

This bris was also a reunion, a testament to the way Jewish life connects us across time and place. I first met Sarah when she was working with Encounter Programs, in which I participated multiple programs, and it was through Encounter that I also met Rabbi Shani Rosenbaum, who was working alongside her. To now stand together, years later, in a moment of joy and new beginnings was profoundly meaningful.

Beyond those connections, this gathering brought together people from so many different corners of my own life—friends (shout out to Anna Wolfe!), colleagues, and familiar faces from unexpected places—all drawn together by the power of simcha and the transcendence of our Mesorah, tradition. Moments like this are a reminder that even in times as difficult as these, the Jewish people continue to love, to embrace and to build.

Under Rabbi Shani’s thoughtful leadership, the ceremony embodied everything a bris should be: a joyous welcome, a recognition of history, and a promise for the future.

This week, I had the honor of officiating the bris of Gabriel Gideon—a name chosen with deep purpose. His mother, Rachel, is an attorney and advocate for criminal justice reform, and she chose Gideon in honor of Clarence Gideon, whose Supreme Court case secured the right to legal counsel for those who couldn’t afford it. For her, this name is more than tradition—it’s a prayer for fairness, integrity, and the values she hopes to instill in her son.

During the ceremony, her family spoke so beautifully about her—her strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice. It was truly special to witness.

Her kind words about my role in this experience mean the world:
